Klondike Wind Farm
Named after the original red brick Klondike Schoolhouse, the Klondike Wind Farm is located five miles east of Wasco, Ore. The wind farm was developed by Northwestern Wind Power and energized on December 2001. It has a peak output of 25 megawatts. The project was subsequently purchased by PPM Energy and now operates as Klondike Wind LLC.
The power generated from the Klondike Wind farm is collected at the Klondike Schoolhouse Substation (KSHS) where the 34.5-kilovolt (kV) collector line where initially it was stepped up to 69-kV to connect to the existing Wasco Electric Coop (WEC) 69-kV Klondike line. A 115-kV transmission line was subsequently built and owned by WEC as part of phase II for Northwestern Wind Power. The WEC transmission line connects to the BPA 115-kV DeMoss substation.
BPA provided metering and communications to integrate the project. Control, relaying, and transfer trip of the Big Eddy-DeMoss 115-kV line were provided to prevent the possibility of a transformer overload at DeMoss.
